East Road 1950 to now: 70 years of changes in Cambridge

5th October at 2:15 pm3:45 pm

- £1 – £2.50

Hosted and organised by the Cambridgeshire Association for Local History.

Admission is free for CALH members (£8 per year), £1 for affiliated members and £2.50 for visitors and guests.

Mary Burgess, author and archivist at the Cambridgeshire Collection will be giving a talk on one of the most interesting of town streets in Cambridge – East Road. A world away from the ivory towers and tourists, East Road was one of the main roads that ran through an industrial slum of Cambridge that grew quickly in the 1800s.

The road today looks incredibly different to what it was even as recently as the 1960s. In between the many pubs along East Road were churches, chapels, mission rooms, reading rooms, coffee houses and many a small business and workshop. A far cry from the modern office blocks, 1980s shopping centre and 21C university buildings.

Come and see a selection of rare and not-previously-seen photos from the Cambridgeshire Collection.
