Dr Ann Kennedy Smith presents this talk about the first Cambridge University brides. Dr Ann Kennedy Smith is a published writer and tutor. She is writing a biography of Ida Darwin and her circle. This talk focuses on the women students and university wives who arrived in the 1870s and became actively involved in important issues of the day, both in Cambridge and nationwide. Three women’s stories will be highlighted: the beautiful American Lady Caroline Jebb (‘Aunt Cara’ in Gwen Raverat’s Period Piece), the economist Mary Paley Marshall and the influential mental health campaigner Ida Darwin.
