Let’s fill Cambridge with trees!

Cambridge City Council has partnered with Trees for Streets to make it easier for residents to fund tree planting in streets and parks across the city. Both the Cambridge Street Tree Sponsorship Scheme and Parks Celebration Trees Scheme offer everyone a fantastic opportunity to play a part in greening our beautiful city further. Sponsor a tree, and you can choose to look after it yourself, or have the council team do it. Find out more about the next steps here.

Fibre Network installation reaches Queen Edith’s

City Fibre has been undertaking a £20m ‘Fibre-to-the Premises’ installation that will reach nearly every home and business in Cambridge, enabling Gigabit-speed internet connectivity. Their efforts have now reached our area, so expect to see extensive pavement works and new ‘street furniture’ going in. When they’re working in your area, you’ll receive a notice letter in a green envelope. The company tells us that they are “rarely outside anyone’s property for more than a couple of days.” Anyone with any queries can ring the helpline number 0800 0836160.

Latest Coronavirus news

  • Coronavirus restrictions remain in place, including for people who have been vaccinated. You can meet indoors in a group of up to 6 people, or a group of any size from 2 households; or outside in a group of up to 30 people. More details at the government website here.
  • Anyone aged 18 and over can now book a vaccination, with plenty of appointments available at the Cherry Hinton vaccination centre.
  • Anyone over 40 can now have a second vaccination after 8 weeks. You can manage your vaccinations here.
  • Local data analyst Phil Rodgers reckons that in Cambridge, we have 75% of residents on at least one dose, and 44% with two, so if you’ve had the vaccinations you’re able to get, do encourage others to do so.
  • Phil also highlights how cases are rising quickly again in Cambridge, although Queen Edith’s, Cherry Hinton and Coleridge wards are the least affected in the city.

Major roadworks to run all summer

Apologies for being the bearers of bad tidings, but our local councillors tell us that residents on some streets in the south of Queen Edith’s have been contacted today by Cadent (the gas contractors) about major roadworks. These will affect Babraham Road, Wort’s Causeway and the surrounding area, starting on 5 July and running through to September. The letter is sadly short on detail and councillors are trying to get more precise information. One immediate clarification is that, contrary to the impression created in the letter, Wort’s Causeway will ‘only’ be closed at its junction with Hills Road (not both ends). During a three week period, there will be a (lengthy) diversion via Cherry Hinton Road/Babraham Road or Limekiln Road/Queen Edith’s Way. More information when we have it.

Robin Hood junction work nears completion

The roadworks at the Robin Hood junction are coming to an end. The permanent traffic signals were scheduled to be switched on and working today. Work will follow on testing the signals to ensure the timings are as effective as possible. There is some red surfacing outstanding, and the junction will continue to be lit with temporary lighting until all the new street lighting is delivered. Daniel Downes, Lead Engineer – Signals and Systems at the County Council, tells us that some of the outstanding work will be completed next week during off peak hours only.

City Council area committee meeting next week

The first council South Area Committee Meeting since the recent elections will be held online next Monday (21 June) in the evening. It’ll be a chance to hear from our new councillors, as well as the re-elected ones, and there’s a full report on environmental services in the area. The report talks about what the council team has been doing in recent weeks, including dealing with verge parking, dog control, abandoned vehicles, fly-tipping and more. As ever, there’ll be a chance for any member of the public to ask questions – either in writing, or in person online. Everything you might want to know can be found here.

  • Anyone aged 21 and over can now book a vaccination, with plenty of appointments available at the Cherry Hinton vaccination centre.

Are busways and car parks the future?

The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) is at an advanced stage of planning to build three busways and five car parks at a cost of £419 million, including the busway across the countryside to a car park the other side of Babraham. Campaign group Smarter Cambridge Transport believes the time for this plan has passed, and wants residents to let councillors on the GCP board know they agree. Find out more here.

‘Happy To Help’ Service comes to an end

The Queen Edith’s Community Forum’s “Happy To Help” volunteer schemewas set up alongside the first ‘lockdown’ in 2020. In that time over 250 people in our area have volunteered on several hundred calls for emergency help from other members of our local community, including shopping, collecting prescriptions, and checking in on neighbours. The organising team has now decided to bring “Happy To Help” to a close, as we have not received many requests for help in recent weeks, and we’d like to let our wonderful team of call administrators enjoy their summer! On behalf of all Queen Edith’s neighbours who have been supported by the scheme, we would like to say a heartfelt thanks to our volunteers for any help you’ve given (or just offered!) in the past year. It has been a wonderful community effort.

Help design navigation around the Biomedical Campus

The growth of the Biomedical Campus is forcing a reassessment of how staff, visitors and others, including local residents, travel to and around the site. Vaccination Volunteering ends with smiles

After more than 30 vaccination days spread over 21 weeks, the hugely successful NHS COVID-19 vaccination programme at Cornford House Surgery came to a close this week, having provided well over 20,000 vaccinations. In one of the largest volunteering exercises ever seen in the area, over 150 local residents helped at the sessions, rain or shine, during the period. They provided the staff required to welcome and sign in visitors, organise the car parking and assist in the observation tent when required. More than 200 people had initially offered their time for the service. It’s estimated that between them, the volunteers provided well over 2,500 hours of unpaid work. You can see more pictures from the last day here.

New ward opens at Addenbrooke’s

A newly built 20-bed ward has opened at Addenbrooke’s, as part of a large-scale development to increase the hospital’s capacity. Ward T2 is one of five wards being built in the coming year which will add an extra 116 beds to the hospital. The first patients to be looked after in T2 are all medically fit for discharge but need some form of community support.
