Find out about the latest work on ovarian cancer

Each year about 7,500 women in the UK are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and only 43% of women in England survive five years beyond their diagnosis. This is because the disease is often diagnosed late, treatment options are limited, and many women develop resistance to current therapies. A CBC on Virtual Tour webinar next Friday (1 July) features Professors James Brenton and Paul Pharoah, leaders of the Ovarian Cancer Programme at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre, speaking about pioneering research in Cambridge that’s aiming to improve outcomes for ovarian cancer patients. Find out about the symptoms, treatments, clinical trials and latest innovations in ovarian cancer. Details of how to register are here.

Adopt your street to improve biodiversity

Would you like to have more control over the vegetation growth and appearance of your street? Cambridge City Council’s “Happy Bee” streets scheme encourages you and your neighbours to ‘adopt’ your street and create a healthier environment. Your street must be in a 20mph zone, to ensure work can be carried out safely, and other residents of your street will need to show general support for joining the scheme. There’s much more information here.

Farewell to the “honey lady”

Joy Barker, affectionately known by locals as the “honey lady”, has passed away. Joy maintained her garden on Hills Avenue/Baldock Way, with its honey for sale and its chickens, for over 20 years. It was a part of many local residents’ childhoods, as described so memorably in the wonderful article “I miss the honey lady”: How one resident helped her community to understand what is truly valuable by Jagjit S Chadha. Everyone should read it. The garden is of course now the ‘Joy’s Garden’ community space, and you can read about that (as well as Chloe Brown’s lovely interview with Joy) in this Queen Edith’s magazine article.

How can we create a greener Queen Edith’s?

Are you interested in finding sustainable ways of living locally? The Queen Edith’s Community Forum and the Friends of Rock Road Library are looking at developing an interesting, informative and sociable series of events that will explore what we can all do to reduce our impact on the climate. The first session is next Thursday (23 June) from 7.30pm – 9pm at Rock Road Library, where we will be starting with looking at the Cambridge Carbon Footprint calculator. Apart from leading you through the calculator (bring a smartphone or tablet if you have one), we will work out together what else we can do to make Queen Edith’s a better place to live. The event is free and there will be locally sourced refreshments available!

New artwork to visit on Biomedical Campus

If you’re looking for a diversion on a local walk, there’s a new piece of public arton The Green and The Gardens, outside Royal Papworth Hospital on the Biomedical Campus. The touring outdoor piece by British artist Luke Jerram is called In Memoriam, and it comprises over 80 flags made of NHS bedsheets, arranged to form a medical logo in white and NHS blue. It’s designed for people to spend time walking through and sitting within, and remembers all those we have lost from the pandemic, as well as being a tribute to all the biomedical researchers and health and care workers who have gone above and beyond. In Memoriam will be in place until 12 July.

Guided busway safety report published

An independent, expert safety study on both the northern and southern sections of the busway has been published. Queen Edith’s County Councillor Alex Beckett says that “We have already implemented many of the recommendations, such as a 30mph speed limit on the whole southern section. Many of the markings, signs and high-friction surfacing will be complete by the end of August. As (the experts) have indicated that ‘a physical fence (on the southern section) would not be a long-term practical intervention’ we are now in an ongoing dialogue about removing the temporary fence.” More here.

Reminiscences of the Queen’s 70-year reign

This is one of the best things you’ll watch all weekend, and it was made right here in Queen Edith’s. The ten-minute film A Recipe for a Queen was co-created by Cambridge Junction, residents of Heathlands House Care Home, Queen Emma Primary School and Cherry Hinton Friday Friends Club of senior citizens. Led by singer-songwriter Yvonne Hercules and filmmaker Peter Harmer, and with creative input from associate artist Hannah Jane Walker, it’s part of a community project to explore people’s reminiscences of the Queen and her seventy-year reign. Click on the picture above or here to watch it on YouTube.

Country Park expands

We can now enjoy an extra 30 acres of wonderful countryside at Wandlebury Country Park, after the opening of two new areas. “The Gallops” was used for training racehorses when Wandlebury was a stables during the 1800s and has a wonderful vista over Cambridge. The other area, which was previously farmland, has over 2000 volunteer-planted trees and is being cultivated to be sown with a meadow seed mix to create rare chalk grassland. Writer Robert Macfarlane cut the ribbon at the opening. More about the park here.

Online presentation of proposed road changes

Following on from last week’s discussion of the proposed road classification changes in the area, you might want to watch an online update from the GCP on this and other projects in the south of the city and beyond. These include the CSET busway, Greenways (including Linton Greenway) and the Foxton “Travel Hub”. It takes place next Tuesday (7 June) between 6pm and 8pm. Sign up here to be sent details of the presentation.

Support for young and old

The national Household Support Fund has been extended and the County Council is now able to offer food vouchers with a value of £15 per child per week, for the current half term break and over the summer holidays. Schools will be contacted directly and eligible parents notified. There’s also support available for pensioners experiencing financial hardship, and the County Council is partnering with Age UK to provide this. More details are available here.

Bin collections a day later

Bin collections after the Jubilee weekend will be a day later than usual. The collection schedule returns to normal from Monday 13 June. Check your own road’s collections using the normal link towards the end of this newsletter.

Coffee morning at the library tomorrow

The next Friends of Rock Road Library event in the Library garden is a coffee morning to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. This takes place tomorrow morning (Saturday 4 June) from 10.30am to noon. There’ll be coffee and cakes, a royal quiz, a bring-and-buy plant stall, Jubilee memorabilia display, a book stall, a special guest story-time for little ones, and of course, Lego! All welcome – just come along.

Fundraising pub quiz on Monday night

In the summer of 2023, more than 40,000 Scouts from all over the world will gather in Korea for the 25 World Scout Jamboree, and Lukas, a local Scout, has been selected to attend as part of the UK contingent. But there’s a lot of money to raise before he can do so, and as part of this, there’s a Pub Quiz at the Queen Edith on Monday night (6 June) at 7pm with ‘legendary’ quizmaster Dave B. Just come along. It’s £5 per person with up to 6 in a team. If you’d like to donate to Lukas’ efforts separately, you can do so here.

Learn about our trees

Next Tuesday (7 June) there’s a gentle guided walk around Wandlebury Country Park to learn about native trees. A knowledgeable Cambridge Past, Present & Future Warden will help you to identify tree species using features such as bark, leaves, flowers and fruits. It’s a free event (with a small donation welcome). More information here.

Coronavirus Update

The government’s recommended steps to reduce the risk of catching and spreading COVID-19 are as follows: get vaccinated; let fresh air in if meeting indoors, or meet outside; and consider wearing a face covering in crowded, enclosed spaces.

You can find more information here on:

  • Staying safe;
  • Testing and staying at home;
  • International travel;
  • Long COVID; and
  • Work, self-employment and business support.

New Scientist reports that an estimated 2 million people in the UK have ‘long COVID’ or lingering COVID-19 symptoms more than four weeks after their initial coronavirus infection. Of those surveyed, 55% with long COVID had fatigue, the most commonly reported symptom. This was followed by 32% of people experiencing shortness of breath, 23% having a cough and 23% experiencing muscle aches. Read more here.

Food Hub news

The Queen Edith’s Community Food Hub is open tomorrow (Saturday) as usual, from 10.30am to 12noon at St James Church on Wulfstan Way. All in need are welcome, no questions asked. The Coffee Chat is open too!

Food donations may be brought to the church on Saturday mornings from 10.00am to 10.30am. The team tells us it’s usually particularly in need of tinned beans (not baked beans) and tinned fish, but all contributions are welcome.
